SFD - AVIATION – THE BETTER WAY TO FLY.

History

Whatever the reason for your journey and whatever your destination, Stuttgarter Flugdienst offers you a convincing alternative to a scheduled flight. Today, customised business and private charters are the benchmark in terms of being right on time, saving time and offering maximum flexibility in travel planning. For almost six decades, SFD has been a byword for competence, reliability and the highest safety standards.

But the development of SFD – particularly in the beginning – was anything but easy. In the 1950s, business flights were still seen by many as an expensive luxury. For that reason, the main business of SFD when it was founded in 1956 was sightseeing flights and flights for aerial photography.

In the decade of the 1960s that followed however, the economic miracle gathered pace, time became an increasingly important factor and the demand for business trips increased. The logical consequence of this was that SFD acquired a Britten Norman Islander to cover this demand.

This was followed in 1974 by the founding of Contact Air by Gunther Eheim, which with an ever-growing fleet of Learjets laid on global business flights for companies in the Stuttgart region.

During the 1980, the fleet of jets was replaced by the more efficient turboprop BAE Jetstream und Beechcraft King Air series, and Contact Air became more and more of a route carrier.

When in the 1990s Contact Air increasingly operated scheduled flights, SFD was spun off as an independent charter airline. With new aircraft, the company was now focussed on the business and executive charter sector.
